Pre-Tax Treatment of PERS 2.7% @ 55 Reimbursement

The 6.7% retirement contribution that has been coming out of your paychecks for the 2.7% @ 55 retirement plan (PERS27 on your pay summary) will be considered a pre-tax deduction for all of Calendar Year 2011.

In January, you received your W-2 for 2011.  The W-2 reflects the adjusted Federal and State taxable earnings.

Please use your W-2 for preparing your Federal and State income tax returns for 2011, not your end-of-year pay summary.  Finance will send further explanation of the adjustment and how it impacts your taxable earnings when we distribute W-2s.

If you have immediate questions about this adjustment, you may contact Candace Tysdal at extension 8285 or Al Barlaan at extension 4909.

Bike@Work

Bicycling to work! The Bike@Work program was launched June 2010. Eight City locations have a variety of bikes for City employees' use to commute between City offices. The Urban-X bike is made by KHS; it is a size Medium (which fits most employees), and has size 26" wheels. The bikes are available at BBB; City Hall; Civic Center; Finance; HED (Housing & Economic Development); OSE; Pier; & Solid Waste.

Bike@Work encourages staff to bicycle between city facilities and to nearby meetings on one of 8 specially branded city bikes. A collaborative effort of staff in the Planning and Community Development and Office of Sustainability and the Environment, the Bike@Work program supports LUCE Transportation Demand Management (TDM) goals, bicycle awareness and environmental stewardship as well as healthy habits among staff.  Each bike comes fully equipped with safety gear, reflective City logo signage, and an odometer to monitor usage and carbon savings. The Bikes are financed by OSE (Office of Sustainability & the Environment), and subsidized by TMD (Transportation Management).

City employees will need to sign a Liability Release form; take a self test; and watch an on-line video before using the new City bikes.

Member Tip

Designated Physician

DoctorIf a person pre-designates a physician and the physician agrees to treat the person for a work-related injury, then the injured employee may immediately go to their own physician (the only exception is a chiropractor, who can be pre-designated, but not treat with until the 31st day). If a person does not pre-designate a physician, then the City maintains medical control for the first 30 days following the injury. After thirty days, an injured employee may select a physician to treat; provided they have not been discharged from care.

MEA is looking for a few good Stewards

Help MEAOften when working on the job site, members sometimes overlook our Union Steward's role in the labor-management relationship. Being a Steward is a difficult task. As a Steward of this Association, you must be willing to volunteer a reasonable amount of your personal time. The purpose of union Stewards is job site union representation. Often, they are the first person sought out when there are problems on the job site.

A Steward is a vital extension of the MEA Board and here's how you can help. Click Here for a list of current Stewards.

Pre-Supervisor Academy

The Academy is currently offered to City employees who are performing in a "lead" capacity. Performing in a "lead" capacity is defined as coordinating the work of others including scheduling and training employees and providing input to the employee's supervisor regarding performance evaluations. The Academy was designed for those employees who plan to compete for entry-level supervisory positions within the next five years. Positions at the level of superintendent, administrator or manager usually require more years of experience performing as a supervisor. Attending the Academy does not guarantee that an employee will be promoted into a supervisory position. To be considered for the Pre-Supervisory Academy or if you are unsure if you are performing in a lead capacity you should e-mail or call your Board representative. This is an excellent way to advance your position in the city.
